Victor Tolubiev Howes was born in 1822. Baptised 22/11/1822 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

His parents were: Hortensia Howes (nee Libbis) and John (James) Howes. In 1854 he married Sarah Howard (nee Young) in Stepney, Middlesex.

       This strange  name Victor Toloubioff Howes get after his cousin
       Victor Touloubieff (1804-1823), son of Hortensia Libbis and Russian seaman
       Nikolay Touloubieff. "Prototype" Victor Touloubieff graduated from the
       Royal Marine College at Portsmouth (the only foreigner in the history
       of the College), sailed on frigate Active under the command of Sir Alexander
       James Gordon, and died in London aged 19. But it is another story...

They had 5 children:

-Victor Tolubioff Howes, abt 1854, London
-Mary Clifton Howes, 1858, Bow, Middlesex
-Kate Carrew Howes, 1860, Coringa Bay, East Indies
-Sarah Alice Howes, 1861, Linchouse, Middlesex
-Frederick Augustus Howes, 1864, Bangkok Roads, Siam

In the 1881 census, Victor Toloubioff Howes, retired Master Mariner and his wife Sarah Howes lived at Mill Road, Thurlton, Norfolk County.

Died 30/08/1907, aged 84 years. Buried at Thurlton graveyard together with his wife Sarah (1910)

Service record:

1847: Master, Chinese junk Little Catherine. Unseccesfull voyage from Singapore to Hong Kong. Ship was wrecked in Tonquin Bay.

1850: Chief Mate
, ss Scindian. Voyage from London to Cape of Good Hope

1851 – 1853: Chief Mate
, ss Hempsyke, 665 tons.

1853: Appointed as Master of ss Hempsyke. Voyage to Port Philip.

1853-1857: Master of ss Hempsyke.  Voyages with troops during Crimean War.

1857: Master
, ss Kent, 815 tons

1857-1864: Master
, ss Burlington, 458 tons. East India trade.

1865 – 1866: Master
, ss Himalaya. East India trade.

1867 – 1870: Master
, ss Clyde, 1140 tons. Voyages with troops London – Calcutta.

Master’s Certificate received in 1851
Commisioned as Lieutenant RNR in 1869.

At least one known painting of Victor Tolubiev Howes 'Mail Packet off Eastbourne' is at The British Postal Museum & Archive.

The following Diary written by Victor Howes was deposited to Norfolk Record Office somewhere in 1960' by heirs of the author. 

This Diary describes the voyage of Chinese junk Little Catherine from Singapore to Hong Kong that ended by wreck in Tonquin Bay. Victor Howes was detained by Chinese Administration and was released in 1848 after British Foreign Office interference.

So, we set sails and start the Voyage...
